Manor Wood Planning Meeting
Wednesday January 11, 2012
7:30 PM
McKinley Fire House
Doug Wendell, Director of Abington Parks Department, is holding a public meeting to present the Manor Woods Master Plan on Wednesday January 11, 2012, at 7:00 PM at the McKinley Firehouse, 893 Jenkintown Rd, Elkins Park PA 19027. The park is a 5-acre wooded area across from the main entrance to Alverthorpe Park on Forrest Avenue.
There has been some social media information on the proposed plan such as a football field and the associated parking. There was a committee formed to guide the process which included neighbors, business leaders and Township officials including me. The committee made it very clear that the use of the parcel was for the entire community and was to include such ideas as walking paths, bike trails bird watching posts and open space.
This project is one that former Commissioner Michael O'Connor, myself and the McKinley Civic Association worked on to protect this gem of land in our neighborhood. Many meetings were attended along with testimony before the Abington Board of Commissioners that any clear cut of these woods would not be tolerated. Persistence paid off and the property is now owned by the Township (the tax payers). As your elected official, I will not support any plan that the neighbors do not approve of.

Abington Zoning Code being Reviewed
The Abington Township Zoning Code is being reviewed by a group of citizens, commissioners, Montgomery County Planning staff and Abington Township staff. The entire code is being looked at to see where there a inconsistencies and loop holes that have been used in the past where certain development projects have been a concern to residents. There have been some new zoning districts looked at such as Transitional Zoning where a residential neighborhood meets a commercial area. This can be seen more on the Old York Corridor than any where else.
In McKinley, it appears that the zoning is correct and any change would be first discussed in a local meeting then it would have to be eventually voted on by the Board of Commissioners.
There has been some concern brought to my attention that the commissioners are changing this on their own without input from anyone. This is NOT true, any change has to be in an open meeting for resident discussion. I am one of the commissioners on the review board, my previous years on the Abington Zoning Board for which I was the Charmian my last year will bring the needed input for our community. If you have any questions you can always call me.
One of our goals is to look at the Planned Business District. A survey for public input is available to get a concensus of what the community may be interested in see happen. Please visit the link below to input your valued opinion.
