About Jay O'Connor

My wife Linda and I have lived here in McKinley for the past twenty five years.  We moved here from the Lawndale section of Philadelphia where we both worked in center city.  What attracted us to Abington was the close proximity to the city and the openness of the suburbs.   When we first visited Alverthorpe Park, we knew the right decision was made.  Linda and I have a son Devin who graduated from Neumann University.

We have been members of the McKinley Civic Association since we moved here and I had the opportunity to serve on the Board of that organization for many years.

In 2000, I was appointed to the Abington Zoning Board where I served as Charmian there my last year.  In 2005, our former Commissioner moved from the area and I was appointed to fill his position.  In 2006, I was elected to the position which runs until 2010.  In 2010 I was successful in running for the Commissioner position again and will serve for the next four years in this role.

I have had many positive experiences since serving on the Abington Board of Commissioners.  Some items that I have worked on with interest in Ward 4 are:
  • Acquisition of the Somerford Property on Forrest Ave
  • Installation of soccer fields at McKinley School for our children
  • SLOW DOWN signs
  • Traffic Control on Shelmire Street
  • McKinley Holiday Parade
  • McKinley Halloween Parade
  • Township Line Road Opening
  • Neighbor Complaints
  • Animal Control Complaints
  • Street re-paving
  • Zoning Issues
  • Creation of web site for our ward  www.abingtonward4.com
  • Additional traffic control signs on Zane Ave.
  • Assisted McKinley Civic Association in obtaining a $5k grant for community use through State Rep. Josh Shapiro's office

These past years working in the community has given me the opportunity to meet many neighbors and have enjoyed working with them on community issues.
